Yammer Update

What’s Up with Yammer? Yammer is a hot social media tool for business. The easiest way to describe its features is that it creates a Facebook like social media site specifically for your company and your business partners. It allows collaboration in some ways not unlike Microsoft SharePoint, but with a great deal more simplicity. It really makes setting up a company Intranet easy. The big news last year was that Yammer was such a hit that Microsoft decided to… [Read More…]

Trending Mobile In a Big Way

Flurry Analytics recently posted statistics tracking usage of smartphones and tablets across both Android and IOS devices. These statics are interesting, and maybe not what one might expect. According to Flurry, the average time spent per mobile device is slightly more than 2.5 hours per day. Of that time, 80% is spent within applications, and only 20% is spent browsing the web. Surprisingly, email only gets about 3 minutes per day. What is the biggest category? You might have guessed… [Read More…]

Windows 8 Mobile

Have you noticed the barrage of ads about new Windows 8 phones and tablets?  It will be interesting to see what inroads Microsoft can make to the tablet market.  iPad and Andriod definitely have the market share now.  Microsoft would like to pick up both the consumer market and the business market with their new line.  The business market seems more likely at this point, since presumably the fact that it is a Windows 8 platform will create easier compatibility… [Read More…]

Favorite Travel Apps

The holidays are here! Many of us will be traveling to see our friends and family or just taking a little time for relaxation. Here are few of my favorite free travel apps for both iPhone and Android  that may make traveling just a little bit easier: Yelp. A go-to app for restaurant suggestions. Search for the type of food you are looking for and Yelp will give you a list of the most popular restaurants to choose from. You can see what the… [Read More…]

Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone? How Do You Choose?

Are you in the market for a new laptop? Have you considered that a new smartphone or tablet might be a better choice? Smartphones and tablets are virtually replacing personal laptop computers. Actually, they are revolutionizing portable devices. Smartphones are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but they do have limited capability. Tablets are a better fit for people looking for more functionality than a smartphone can give you. So, what do tablets and smartphones do differently from your laptop? Sure, you can… [Read More…]

My Favorite To-Do List App

Looking for a simple to-do list app that works on iPad, Andriod, and PC? Check out Wunderlist.  It is a simple application that allows you to create lists of things to do. This app syncs to the web, so that you can have your to-do lists on all of your devices. It allows you to prioritize, set due dates, take notes, star items, and complete items. However, what I really like about it is that it is simple. Many to-do list managers make… [Read More…]

SmartPhone Apps for New Parents

As a new first-time father, who lives halfway across the country from my own parents, I naturally turned to technology to aid me in my child-rearing. Fortunately, there are plenty of electronic devices out there to help someone like me who has no idea what he’s doing. Unfortunately, they aren’t always easy on the wallet. With low-end baby monitors running from $50-$100 and musical night lights running around $25 apiece, low-cost alternatives are an attractive concept. One of the latest trends in new smartphone… [Read More…]

Google Privacy Changes Coming March1st

Google will implement their new privacy policy and terms of service agreement on March 1st. They are consolidating 60 separate privacy policies and extending them across most of Google’s offerings. This pretty much means that all your Google account data will live in a single profile. Google says this change will ultimately benefit their users.  They will use the information to target advertising to your interests, age group, location and more.  This change affects millions of users; anyone with a… [Read More…]

Turbo Transformer Tablets

If you are looking for a new tablet, you may want to check out the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Series.  The newest units in this series are the first tablet devices to use the new Tegra 3 processor which is screaming fast.  This device runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. These tablets are very light and thin, just .33 inches and 1.5lbs, and incorporate more i/o jacks than either the iPAD or the Samsung Galaxy.   They have a docking… [Read More…]

Google Offers Offline Access of Docs for Android Users

Google has updated its Android app for Google Docs, so that users can access their files without an internet connection. You can now access your documents, presentations, spreadsheets or any file in Google Docs that you have saved while being offline. Google Docs will automatically update offline files, as soon as you’re back online or your files can be manually updated when there is a data connection. Just make sure to select to “make available offline” in the app’s document… [Read More…]
