Yammer Update

What’s Up with Yammer? Yammer is a hot social media tool for business. The easiest way to describe its features is that it creates a Facebook like social media site specifically for your company and your business partners. It allows collaboration in some ways not unlike Microsoft SharePoint, but with a great deal more simplicity. It really makes setting up a company Intranet easy. The big news last year was that Yammer was such a hit that Microsoft decided to… [Read More…]

Trending Mobile In a Big Way

Flurry Analytics recently posted statistics tracking usage of smartphones and tablets across both Android and IOS devices. These statics are interesting, and maybe not what one might expect. According to Flurry, the average time spent per mobile device is slightly more than 2.5 hours per day. Of that time, 80% is spent within applications, and only 20% is spent browsing the web. Surprisingly, email only gets about 3 minutes per day. What is the biggest category? You might have guessed… [Read More…]

Finding a Google Reader Alternative

As you may have heard, Google Reader will soon be no more. July 1st, Google will be shutting down its popular RSS reader much to many people’s disappointment. Some of you might wonder, why do you need an RSS reader? I have found using a reader makes it much easier to keep up with the blogs I follow. I know when there is a new post, can categorize them and easily save favorites. I am getting desperate in my quest… [Read More…]

How Productive Are You?

The sheer pace of business and life makes it difficult to remember what comes next, what is critical, what is really important, and what can wait until tomorrow.  Applying technology is not the solution to every problem, and technology won’t solve our own lack of discipline.  But, this area of cutting through the clutter and staying focused is one that technology can certainly help with, if blended with good time management and organizational principles. Here are a few things I have… [Read More…]

Favorite Travel Apps

The holidays are here! Many of us will be traveling to see our friends and family or just taking a little time for relaxation. Here are few of my favorite free travel apps for both iPhone and Android  that may make traveling just a little bit easier: Yelp. A go-to app for restaurant suggestions. Search for the type of food you are looking for and Yelp will give you a list of the most popular restaurants to choose from. You can see what the… [Read More…]

The BYOD Balancing Game

Our voracious appetite for technology and social media has brought on a wave of employees, who would like to connect to work with their personal devices. This wave brings with it both opportunity and risk for those of us who are tasked with managing and securing business information. This phenomenon has been going on for some time. Many of you have already made some adjustments for the BYOD or Bring Your Own Device movement, maybe without even giving it much… [Read More…]

Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone? How Do You Choose?

Are you in the market for a new laptop? Have you considered that a new smartphone or tablet might be a better choice? Smartphones and tablets are virtually replacing personal laptop computers. Actually, they are revolutionizing portable devices. Smartphones are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but they do have limited capability. Tablets are a better fit for people looking for more functionality than a smartphone can give you. So, what do tablets and smartphones do differently from your laptop? Sure, you can… [Read More…]

My Favorite To-Do List App

Looking for a simple to-do list app that works on iPad, Andriod, and PC? Check out Wunderlist.  It is a simple application that allows you to create lists of things to do. This app syncs to the web, so that you can have your to-do lists on all of your devices. It allows you to prioritize, set due dates, take notes, star items, and complete items. However, what I really like about it is that it is simple. Many to-do list managers make… [Read More…]

Hi-Tech Camping

Summer is fast approaching, and in our house that means later bedtimes, trips to the beach, lots of popsicles and our annual camping trip. In truth, I am not crazy about camping. I don’t like sleeping on the ground with the bugs and that creepy raccoon that walks around our tent thinking he is entitled to my marshmallows! Don’t get me started…. that being said I am pretty excited about some of the high tech gadgets that are becoming available… [Read More…]
